Everett, WA (Nov. 12) – Joint replacements are one of the most common elective surgeries in the United States and can require lengthy hospitalization and recovery. The Everett Clinic is working to speed up that recovery and reduce hospital stays by launching an innovative new outpatient surgery option. The techniques used with this new option have demonstrated effectiveness in delivering better health outcomes at lower costs to patients1:
- Average weeks to return to normal activity after knee joint replacement—4.4 weeks vs. the national average of 10 weeks
- Average days in the hospital after knee joint replacement—a half-day outpatient surgery vs. three days hospitalized following a traditional replacement surgery
The Everett Clinic is adding this capability to help address the anticipated increased demand for total joint replacements in the United States. It is estimated there will be a 75% increase in total hip replacements and 110% in total knee replacements by 2025 over the 2014 baseline2.
Leading this work is the newly hired Medical Director of Total Joint Replacement, Dr. Craig McAllister. The nationally recognized expert in hip and knee surgeries is working primarily at our Edmonds location, which will soon include a new surgery center. Until that facility is open, McAllister will perform surgeries in Kirkland.
